Burrington Estates (New Homes) Ltd has appointed David Jervis to the position of Group Managing Director as the original company founders Mark Edworthy and Paul Scantlebury step away from the day-to-day running of the business. David joined Burrington Estates three years ago to lead the launch of the company’s new Central England division, following its success in the South West, and now takes operational control of the whole housing business.

Established in 2013 and headquartered in Exeter, Burrington Estates has built a strong reputation as a leading developer across South West England having completed almost 600 homes in the region in the past six years. Last year it embarked on ambitious growth plans boosted by a £15.5m investment from BGF, the UK and Ireland’s most active investor, to expand its residential business. Key to this was the launch of the new Central England division where developments are already under way in Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Berkshire.

David has a strong track record in the housebuilding industry, having set up Spitfire Bespoke Homes in 2010 as the residential development arm of IM Properties. Within seven years, he had built it up into a business with a turnover of £100 million. At Burrington Estates, he will continue to head up the Central division and work closely with Grayham Tucker, the Managing Director for the South West region, helping drive better collaboration and integration across all parts of the business.

Mark Edworthy, Co-Founder of Burrington Estates said: “Paul and I are excited to embark on this new chapter for the company – it was always our vision to step away from the day-to-day running of the business. We congratulate David on his new appointment and know that he, with Grayham’s support, will drive Burrington Estates forward successfully and continue to grow the business that we are so proud of.”

David Jervis, Group Managing Director of Burrington Estates said: “I am very grateful for the opportunity that Mark and Paul have given me, building on the great work that they have achieved so far. I am lucky to be put in charge of a great team, with a strong brand and excellent sites, where there is huge potential to continue to build a sustainable business for the long term. There are many changes occurring within the housebuilding industry, and we need to maintain and enhance our focus on excellent design, quality and customer service.”

Grayham Tucker, Managing Director of Burrington Estates (South West) said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark and Paul for the personal mentorship and guidance over the last few years. The brand is strong as ever and I am looking forward to working with David to gain traction on the synergies between both regions and for the new homes business to excel even further.”

Burrington Estates is a dynamic and agile business that focuses on high specification, design led homes in sustainable new communities. Its product is usually aimed at the mid-market, typically in the range of 15 to 100 units, spanning a wide range of property types. It delivered 97 homes in the financial year 2021/22 and its a four-year development programme has a value of £323million. It places emphasis on the quality of design, build and specification, through careful attention to detail, the innovative use of technology and sensitive development, as well as ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction. Independent buying agent Heaton & Partners is expanding its role in Country House Consultancy and Property Management with the appointment of Tom Hayes to the team.

Tom’s role will encompass developing and leading a department in charge of the day-to-day management of country houses and estates for both resident and absent owners, as well as wider land agency duties for farmers and equestrian operations. Heaton & Partners will take on every aspect of the management, including employing and interviewing estate staff such as gardeners, housekeepers, cooks, maintenance staff and drivers, both in London and the country.

Tom has considerable experience for the role, having previously managed private clients’ estates in the southeast of England as part of his role within the land management division of Strutt & Parker. Prior to that he was the rural property manager for an extensive private estate in Hampshire. He has also spent some years farming in the south of England.

“I am particularly excited about the new position,” says Tom. “Wherever our clients buy a property, we will be ready to offer a full management service if required.

“Although Heaton & Partners has long offered property management on a smaller scale, my job is to expand this side of the business, continuing to promote the service to clients who buy a property through us, and also to take on the management of established properties and estates from elsewhere as well.”

Edward Heaton, founder and Managing Partner of Heaton & Partners, comments: “Tom brings with him a wealth of knowledge that will be vital in helping us to grow this important area of our business. Having an experienced manager in charge will ensure that we can offer a market-leading service.”

Heaton & Partners predominantly operates in London and the south of England with offices in Newbury and Knightsbridge.

Unprecedented interest in Apprenticeships says BiKBBI https://www.padmagazine.co.uk/jobs-training/unprecedented-interest-in-apprenticeships-says-bikbbi/ Thu, 28 Apr 2022 11:26:18 +0000 https://padmagazine.co.uk/?p=16770 The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) is celebrating a strong start to its ground-breaking…]]>

The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) is celebrating a strong start to its ground-breaking BiKKBI apprenticeship programme as the first recruits get to work in beginning their installation careers.

Launched last October, the BiKKBI apprenticeship programme is a major intervention to support the long-term future of the industry’s workforce. Working with a network of strategic partners in the development of the KBB Fitted Interiors Apprenticeship, BIKBBI has created a solution that enables installers to take on apprentices without having to deal with complications such as recruitment, employment and training provision whilst creating job opportunities for hundreds of youngsters within the KBB installation sector via a national network of approved Centres of Excellence.

The BiKBBI apprenticeship programme was developed along with the associated support service, BiKBBI Skills Plus, in partnership with leading Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA) The Apprenticeship Management Group

Following the launch of the BiKKBI apprenticeship programme, hundreds of employers and potential apprentices got in touch to express an interest in becoming part of the programme. Thanks to BiKBBI and the programme’s partners’ comprehensive package of support – which included carrying out over 300 candidate interviews – the first cohort of the new generation of KBB Installation apprentices have now started work.

The new apprentices include Archie Beadle, who recently joined award-winning Ace Plumbing, based in Essex.

Archie said “I’d started a college course but quickly realised that I would learn a lot more by actually doing a job in the real world. After I found the apprenticeship it was really simple to go through the application process – the team at The Apprenticeship Management Group were really helpful. The work I’ve started is hard but I can already see that I’m going to learn a lot of different skills, which will mean I will have a range of different career opportunities open to me in years to come.”

Paul Miles, Director of Ace Plumbing, said “We’ve tried taking on apprentices in the past but it has never completely worked out as they have not been quite right for us and, in most cases, have been studying for qualifications in things like plumbing that are only one part of the job. The BiKBBI programme has been nothing short of revolutionary though! I was absolutely blown away by the number of applications that came in and the quality of the final candidates. We’ve now been joined by a fantastic apprentice who is working towards a qualification that makes sense while learning on the job as part of our team.”

Another of the businesses that has taken on a new apprentice thanks to the support of the BiKBBI programme is SysColin Tompkins, SystemXL/Redwood Kitchens with new apprentice, Sienna.temXL – the company behind consumer brand Redwood Kitchens and trade-focused KitchenXL.

Colin Tomkins, Director at System XL said “Apprenticeships bring vital new blood to our beautiful kitchen industry. Let’s train them well, celebrate their successes and help them set and achieve their goals – it’s a long haul, but the best formula to shape and build the workforce we want and need.”

Employers taking part in the programme have seen unprecedented levels of interest from potential recruits, with over 30 applications for every vacancy that has been advertised so far – a figure that far exceeds the average number of applications for apprenticeships in similar trades. Combined with the support being provided to ensure a hassle-free recruitment process, this means that installation businesses have been able to select the very best apprentices for them.

Stephen Gregory, an installer who employs Harrison Fish – the winner of BiKBBI’s 2022 Apprentice of the Year award earlier this year, believes that this is a major new benefit for installation businesses.

Stephen Gregory said “After a couple of false starts I managed to recruit an excellent apprentice but it was down to pure luck. Having him on board has meant I’m now making long term plans for my business and am looking to take on another apprentice. The BiKBBI Skills Plus programme means that I can go directly to a ready supply of strong candidates and have support at every step of the recruitment and employment process.”

John Henry, Director of the Apprenticeship Management Group, commented “We are delighted to be part of this really exciting time within the KBB industry and help the sector bridge the skills gap by bringing on specialist apprentices to be the workforce of the future. For each installation role that we are advertising, we are seeing unprecedented numbers of applicants wanting to learn real trades in a growth sector. This is bucking the trend in the overall recruitment market and shows the high level of interest in young people looking to acquire planning, fitting, electrical and plumbing skills and become installers.”

BiKKBI apprenticeship programme

BiKBBI has been driving much of the interest with an ambitious outreach programme that is promoting the KBB industry as a viable career option to school-leavers nationwide.

Damian Walters, Chief Executive of BiKBBI, said “Seeing the interest that young people are showing in our industry has been incredibly exciting and I couldn’t be happier that a new generation of installers are now getting their careers off the ground. We established the BiKBBI apprenticeship programme to meet the urgent need to bring in new talent and head off the skills gap crisis. This is a great start.”

However, despite the high levels of interest being shown by potential apprentices and the recruitment support being offered to employers, BiKBBI is warning that there remain several pockets of ‘employer inactivity’ in parts of the UK.

Damian Walters, added “The entire industry now needs to help us kick the programme on by opening up more apprenticeship vacancies. We know that installers are crying out for talent to help meet unprecedented levels of demand for high quality KBB installation. Our apprenticeship programme provides all of the answers to this call with a fit-for-purpose apprenticeship in the Level 2 Fitted Interiors programme; a package of support to help with recruitment; and a growing pool of enthusiastic candidates. The job now is to spread the word about all that is on offer.”

To help the industry encourage more employers to take up the offer of the BiKKBI apprenticeship programme, BiKBBI has developed an ‘Apprenticeships Toolkit’. Available for free download, the toolkit provides a ready-made set of messages and assets for industry stakeholders to use in spreading the word and encouraging vacancies to be created among their networks – including template emails and social media graphics.

The Apprenticeships Toolkit and supporting images can be downloaded here.

Bellway has appointed a new sales advisor to help people find a new home at one of Europe’s biggest residential projects. The housebuilder has brought Melania Rus onto the team at Barking Riverside, where Bellway London Partnerships is one of the developers helping to deliver more than 10,000 new homes.

Melania, from Essex, will be based at the sales office at Fielders Quarter where Bellway is currently building 371 new homes. Melanie has joined Bellway from a sales position at JLL – the real estate services giant and will now be an advisor.

“At JLL my job was selling new homes but we were acting as agents for another company so there was always the extra process of having to check before any deals could be signed off,” said Melania. “Here at Bellway, I have so much more autonomy and can make decisions myself and use my experience and knowledge to help speed the sales process up.

“This demonstrates to the buyer that we at Bellway can be flexible and do what we can to help find the best opportunity with each customer individually. I am very happy to have been given this job at Bellway as they have a reputation in the industry of being a company that really puts their customers first.”

Melania said she had worked as an estate agent for three years before her two-year stint at JLL.

“I am a real people person,” she said. “I love helping buyers achieve their dream of owning their own home and that gives me real job satisfaction. There is no better feeling than handing the keys over to people as they move into their new home. The joy on their faces is always wonderful to see.

“Fielders Quarter in Barking Riverside is a fabulous new development which is proving very popular with all kinds of buyers. We are building a mix of apartments and townhouses at Fielders Quarter which means that we have first-time buyers, young professionals and growing families wanting to buy here.

“The development is set to be one of the top places to live in the capital. There will be a new Overground station and the Thames Clipper is set to launch a service from the site to provide easy access to central London. This means that buying a property at Barking Riverside will not only give you a fabulous new home but will represent a sound investment.”

Amie Triphook-Cole, Head of Sales at Bellway London Partnerships, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome Melania to the company. She brings years of experience in the sales market and her professionalism is already marking her out as a great addition to the team.

“These are very exciting times for us at Bellway London Partnerships as we play a leading role in the ambitious scheme which will see 10,800 new homes delivered to the area on the former Barking Power Station site in East London.”

There is currently a choice one and two-bedroom apartments available to reserve at Fielders Quarter, with prices starting at £261,445.

With National Careers Week (7-12 March) and International Women’s Day (8 March) fast approaching, Bellway North West is proud to showcase its team of inspiring women building careers in the fast-paced construction industry.

Currently developing across Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire, the North West division of the national housebuilding group has noticed a significant 20 per cent increase, compared to last year, in women fulfilling roles that have perhaps more traditionally been associated with men.

In addition to the other 45 females working across the division, Bellway North West now employs 18 women in its build, technical, commercial, land and planning departments.

The total is made up as follows: four women in the build department (one site manager, two assistant site managers and one apprentice plumber), a further four women in the technical team (two architects, one engineer and one trainee engineer), five in commercial (two quantity surveyors, two trainee quantity surveyors and one director) and five in land and planning (two land managers, one assistant land manager, one planner and one apprentice planner).

Proving that the sky is the limit when it comes to progression and success, Teresa Dwyer started her career with Bellway as a quantity surveyor before being promoted to senior quantity surveyor, chief quantity surveyor then commercial manager, followed by commercial director.

She now inspires the next generation and a raft of female apprentices, one of whom was recognised as Bellway’s Apprentice of the Year and highly commended at a ceremony at the House of Commons.

Dwyer said: “Times have changed a great deal and it is incredible to see so many more women in the construction industry, building successful and fulfilling careers especially here at Bellway North West where we are committed to creating equal opportunities for all.”

Further helping to inspire the next generation, Bellway North West’s regional managing director David Williams and construction director Ian Hopkins regularly host meet and greet sessions in local schools and colleges to promote careers in construction which has resulted in a steady increase in school leavers and graduates of both sexes.

Attracting not one but two females from the same family, Bellway employs sisters Amy and Grace Walsh. Amy joined Bellway as a trainee quantity surveyor four years ago and is now fully qualified. Her sister joined the company last year as an apprentice planner.

Amy said: “It is testament to the fantastic team and culture here at Bellway North West that gender stereotypes are officially a thing of the past; roles and development opportunities are available to all which is reflected in the increasing number of women excelling in the more non-traditional roles.”

Students across various trades and professions at Leeds College of Building took part in a unique set of zero carbon seminars. Thanks to support from the recently formed Joseph Aspdin Skills Trust (JAST), a carousel of specialist talks was held at the College’s South Bank and North Street Campuses, focusing on achieving zero carbon in the construction sector.

The audience consisted of over 140 predominantly 16–18-year-olds and their tutors from Plumbing, Brickwork, Construction & Built Environment, Carpentry & Joinery, Plastering, and Wall & Floor Tiling courses.

Students rotated around talks delivered by experts from diverse industries. Topics covered reducing carbon in the home, passive house construction technology and airtightness, retrofitting existing properties, insulation for retrofit solutions, and air & ground heat-pump technology.

The expert speakers represent a range of specialisms, including architecture (R Dawson Architects, Richard Dawson), sustainable home building (Pure Haus, Kevin Pratt and John Blowers), regeneration and housing services (Engie/Together Housing Group, Glen Roberts and Rob Seaman), and insulation (Xtratherm, Neil Davies).

According to the World Green Building Council, the built environment sector is globally responsible for 36% of energy consumption, 38% of energy related carbon emissions, 50% of resource consumption, and expected to double in total footprint by 2060.

The seminars are one component of the JAST Business Plan, assisting the College to contribute towards the UK’s zero-carbon agenda and sustainability goals. The events aimed to raise student and staff awareness of local and national green initiatives in the construction and built environment sector by liaising with other bodies working in this field.

“Leeds College of Building is very appreciative of this investment. JAST is raising the awareness and developments needed to help support the knowledge and skills that young, and older, people will require to achieve major zero-carbon targets set locally and nationally,” said Derek Whitehead, Principal & CEO of Leeds College of Building.

“Furthermore, this work will help inform students of the needs of the construction industry. The sector continues to face unprecedented skills shortages across all occupational areas, which include expertise in zero carbon. We are working hard with employers to address these skills gaps and welcome this support from JAST.”

JAST was set up in 2021 by trustees Geoff Driver, Ken J Patterson, Jackie Coates, Sir John Battle and Baroness Judith Blake. Named after Joseph Aspdin, the 19th century Leeds entrepreneur and manufacturer of cement, its aim is to promote and educate about energy efficiency.

“JAST approached the College to help support and offer opportunities to all young people. We hope to raise awareness of the zero-carbon agenda in communities across Leeds and further afield through the development of vital skills and knowledge, and via important training and work-related opportunities. As the only specialist FE construction college in the UK, Leeds College of Building is well-placed to help us achieve our aims,” added JAST trustee Geoff Driver, who is also an ex-governor of Leeds College of Building, Honorary Alderman, and former Leeds City Councillor for Hunslet and South Leeds.

In 2021, JAST showed their commitment to zero carbon and the College by funding a temporary two-year Construction Skills Project Coordinator post. The primary objective is to coordinate and deliver the JAST Business Plan, supporting students’ awareness of the green/zero-carbon agenda and developing their skills.

Bellway South Midlands has appointed a new land manager as part of an ambitious growth plan across the region.

Christy McLean has joined the housebuilder, which has its regional headquarters in Coventry, as the division sets its sights on increasing the number of houses it builds every year from 352 to 500.

The division is looking for land opportunities throughout Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire and West Northamptonshire as it seeks to expand its housebuilding operations.

Christy, 27, from Solihull, said: “I am delighted to be joining Bellway which has an enviable reputation as a national housebuilder of high-quality new homes. These are exciting times as the industry, and the country as a whole, starts to bounce back from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“But these times are particularly exciting at Bellway South Midlands because the division has recently moved to new offices in Coventry and has assembled a new land team to help achieve its growth targets. I have just joined the team while the Land Director Dan Forrester has only been in his role for a while and land graduate Alice Fish has also recently been appointed.

“The aim is to expand our operations so that we are increasing the number of houses we build from 352 last year to 500 a year within the next few years. That is an increase of 42 per cent which represents an ambitious target and a real challenge for us as a team.”

Christy, who was formerly a land manager at another housebuilder, is looking forward to his new role which will include sourcing land, conducting land appraisals, negotiating land deals and using his knowledge and skills to secure new sites for development.

Bellway Homes is a FTSE 250 Index listed residential housebuilder based in Newcastle upon Tyne, employing almost 3,000 staff across 22 Divisions across England, Scotland and Wales.

Bellway began as a small family business in the North East in 1946 – with a passion for building exceptional quality homes in carefully selected locations, inspired by the needs of real families. We are proud of our heritage in the North East, and remain one of the region’s largest employers, with our Head Office still being located in Newcastle upon Tyne.

To this day, we maintain these same core values, combining our decades of expertise with the level of personalised care that Bellway is known for.

We are delighted to have been awarded 5 star builder status by the Home Builders Federation for the fifth year running, with 9 out of 10 customers saying they would recommend us to a friend.
